Ageism at work: are older employees being left behind?

Our latest research sheds light on a lesser-discussed issue affecting workplaces across the UK: ageism.

While much of the spotlight is on engaging younger generations, our data tells a more nuanced story. One where older employees are too often sidelined, especially when it comes to training, recognition and feeling connected to a company’s mission.

This report is a step toward meaningful change; one powered by people, based on their real experiences and voices.

Why this report matters so much

This conversation is long overdue. In a workplace where multiple generations often work side by side, it’s easy to overlook how age can shape someone’s experience, from development opportunities to wellbeing support.

By confronting age-based disparities head-on, organisations can make more thoughtful, inclusive decisions. It’s not about favouring one age group over another. It’s about creating a workplace that values and motivates everyone, regardless of how long they’ve been in the workforce.

What does the data say about ageism at work?

The numbers in this report challenge common assumptions and expose the quiet disadvantages many older employees face.

    • Only 59% of men aged 50–59 feel they have sufficient access to training and development, compared to 73% of employees aged 18–29.
    • Older men are 13 percentage points less likely to receive regular feedback than younger women.
    • While 70% of younger employees feel senior leaders offer a clear vision, that drops to just 56% for those aged 60 and above.
    • Despite this, 77% of employees aged 50–59 say they plan to stay with their employer; a higher rate than the 57% of 18–29 year olds.

These findings suggest a striking paradox: many older employees stay loyal to their organisations, even when they feel overlooked or undervalued.

They deserve to be heard and have their insights considered.
