Some of the biggest names in the hospitality industry gathered at Lancaster London last night to celebrate’s Best Employer in Hospitality Awards 2014, with an energetic young London bar company taking the top prize.

Despite fierce competition from the likes of Yo Sushi!, Marston’s Inns & Taverns, De Vere Venues, Peach Pub Company and The Rezidor Hotel Group, Urban Leisure Group took the main prize after wowing the judges with their commitment to career development and staff recognition.

Now in its fourth successful year,’s Best Employers in Hospitality Awards are the only established, recognised and free to enter employer awards in the hospitality industry.

Almost 9,000 employees took part in the online survey created by employee engagement experts People Insight to gauge how businesses were supporting, developing and rewarding their staff in such a fast-paced industry.

After whittling down the entries to a 60-strong shortlist, Urban Leisure Group took the top spot after winning Best Medium Pub/Bar Employer in last year’s awards.

Operations Director, Urban Leisure Group Adrian Hartley commented on their win:

“We have tried our hardest to develop an environment where each individual member of staff can flourish and this is just reward for their efforts.”

Tom Debenham, MD of People Insight said the results proved that the hospitality sector had revolutionised the way it treated its workforce.

“Everyone knows that the hospitality industry has unique pressures – a young workforce, high staff turnover, awkward shift patterns and a pressurised atmosphere  – but the  survey shows that the shortlisted  businesses of all sizes are doing something to make it a more attractive,  rewarding and engaging career,”

Tom explained.

“Indeed, we’ve found strong evidence to show that the hospitality sector is one to watch if you want to develop your career, be recognised for your achievements, and enjoy your job at the same time.

“All of these are key drivers of engagement; meaning employers need to focus on them to give them the best chance of retaining a loyal, productive workforce who go the extra mile in their day to day roles.

“Everyone on the shortlist has shown that the hospitality sector is on an upward curve.”

Neil Pattison, Sales Director at commented,

“The best employers understand how much employee engagement matters and why. They are the ones who really consider their employees and work hard to develop and motivate them.

“Every single one of the employers in the shortlist and the category winners should be extremely proud of their achievements. They now carry a badge of honour that sets them apart and lets candidates know they are a Best Employer in Hospitality.”
